ANALYSIS
The Cubs declined Barnette's $3 million club option for 2020 in November after a 2019 season in which he pitched in two major-league games. The 36-year-old missed the first couple months of the season with a shoulder injury and moved to the restricted list to mull over his career options after being sent to the minors in late June. Barnette will finish his career with a 3.53 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 132:43 K:BB across 145.1 innings in four seasons with the Rangers and Cubs.

Back and shoulder injuries limited Barnette to just 26.1 innings last season, sending him to the disabled list on three separate occasions and ending his season in early July. When he was available, he was quite good, bouncing back from a disappointing 2017 campaign to produce a 2.39 ERA. He struck out 25% of the batters he faced while walking just 4.8%. Those numbers, in isolation, are great and would figure to lock Barnette into prominent role somewhere this season, with the potential to pick up some saves should the situation break his way. Given his age (35) and recent injuries, however, it seems more likely that he opens the year in the middle innings. The fact that the reliever had resumed throwing before the end of the season mitigates the injury concern somewhat, but he's unlikely to be worth a pickup before the season starts.
