Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
The utility infielder shuttled between Triple-A Gwinnett and the Braves' big league roster throughout the entirety of the 2016 season. Castro has never been a great hitter at any level during his professional career and last year was no different. In 229 plate appearances with Gwinnett, Castro hit three home runs and slashed .257/.279/.346. His 130 at-bats with the Braves were considerably worse. The 23-year-old finished with a .200 average and a slugging percentage of .208. Castro had just one extra-base hit on the season in his 139 major league plate appearances. He is not very fleet of foot, either, as he has just one stolen base in his last 80 MLB games. His future outlook is aided by the fact that he is a plus defender, but he is highly unlikely to provide any sort of fantasy value in the near future.
Castro spent most of the 2015 season in Triple-A where he hit .268/.314/.297 with no home runs, 36 RBI, and 19 runs scored. He received a September callup to the Braves and received significant playing time, hitting .240/.263/.344 with two home runs. The Mexico native has just seven home runs in 292 career games, and projects as more of a contact hitter in the big leagues as shown by his impressively low strikeout rate of 15 percent in his first stint with Atlanta. However, with Jace Peterson, Gordon Beckham, and Kelly Johnson all on the depth chart at second base, it appears Castro is destined to be a reserve for the Braves in 2016.
