Randolph signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Monday.
ANALYSIS
After the Phillies elected not to add him to the 40-man roster this winter, Randolph elected free agency and sat on the open market for several months before landing with the White Sox. Though he's only 24 years old and is a prospect of some pedigree as a 2015 first-round pick, Randolph didn't flash a fantasy friendly profile during his seven years in the Philadelphia organization. He spent the majority of the 2021 campaign at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, hitting .234 with five home runs and five stolen bases across 164 plate appearances.

Corner-outfield prospects who don't have any plus tools are tough to get excited about in dynasty leagues, and that's where things stand with Randolph. He is a decent hitter with some pop, but players who hit .260 with 15-to-20 home runs, minimal speed on the bases and fringe-average defense typically don't get the chance to play everyday. The left-handed hitter is better against righties (.258/.351/.433 last season) but not so good that he profiles on the strong side of a platoon, especially when factoring in his middling defense. To make matters worse, Randolph is still probably a couple years away from the majors, and the Phillies have a surplus of outfielders. He can be cut loose in most dynasty leagues this offseason.
Randolph had a tough 2016. The 10th overall pick in the 2015 draft got off to a slow start at Low-A Lakewood before hitting the disabled list in late April with a left shoulder strain. That injury lingered for longer than initially expected and cost Randolph more than two months of at-bats. It wasn't until August that Randolph started to hit like one of the top high school bats from his draft class. He has yet to show much in-game power, but that may come later as he continues to develop physically and as a hitter. He has shown a solid feel for the strike zone, and scouts throw above average to plus future grades on his hit tool. Right now, he just needs more at-bats. The Phillies could opt to send him back to Low-A to start the 2016 season, but he could be at High-A Clearwater by his 20th birthday in June.
Randolph, who was taken by the Phillies with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 draft, was considered by many to be the best high school bat available last year. He was assigned to the Gulf Coast League where he hit .302/.425/.442 with 15 doubles, a home run and six stolen bases in 172 at-bats. In addition to the solid slash line, the 18-year-old also showed a nice eye at the plate with 32 walks and 32 strikeouts in 53 games. Randolph has impressive bat speed and projects to add power to his game as he matures. The Phillies will likely have him start the season at Low-A Lakewood. His bat could carry him fairly quickly through the minors.
