Whitley underwent surgery at the end of spring training last year to repair a torn right labrum, otherwise he would have been assigned to High-A as a 21-year-old. The 13th overall pick in 2015, Whitley was a prep center fielder from the Northeast who did not have initial success in pro ball. In 2017, however, he displayed the potential for above-average power, plus speed and good on-base skills. His strikeout rate has been north of 25% above rookie ball, peaking at 28.6% at Low-A, so it is difficult to project a particularly high batting average until he starts making more contact. However, if he were to cut down on the strikeouts, his batted ball profile (32.9 Oppo%, 40.3 GB%) would be tailor made for a relatively high batting average. He has the potential to be a plus defender in center field who hits 18-to-25 home runs and steals 25-plus bases while getting on base enough to garner consideration in the leadoff spot.
