Alvarez was released by the Twins on Wednesday, Brandon Warne of ZoneCoverage.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez failed to earn a minor-league spot after signing with the Twins in January. The 30-year-old owns a 5.06 ERA in 48 career major-league innings and will likely have to prove himself at Triple-A somewhere before getting another chance at the top level.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2015
Just a year removed from his second cup of coffee in the big leagues, Alvarez got off to a horrific start to the season at the Triple-A level. Through 15.1 innings with the Mets' affiliate in Las Vegas, the 27-year-old held an awful 9.98 ERA and 2.12 WHIP, which ultimately led to his dismissal from the 40-man roster. He then landed a spot with the Braves and was able to crack the major league roster with some success (3.00 ERA, 1.07 WHIP with Atlanta), but things went south again after being traded to the Rangers (7.71 ERA, 1.63 WHIP with Texas). However, he excelled at missing bats in the big leagues, as the left-hander fanned 13.8 batters per nine innings between the two teams. Jake Diekman and Alex Claudio are blocking Alvarez's way to consistent innings, although if he can bring his obscenely-high BABIP down to earth, Alvarez's strikeout potential could help him carve out a decent role in the Rangers' bullpen.
Alvarez started the season at Low-A Savannah, moving up two levels and posting a 10-1 record, 114 strikeouts and a 1.10 ERA in 29 games and 73.1 innings before getting the call up to the majors in September. He only made four appearances for the Mets down the stretch, offering few opportunities for him to prove that he's ready to contribute in New York to begin 2015. Alvarez has a mid-90s fastball, average slider and mediocre changeup, but the promotion added him to the 40-man roster and protected him from the Rule 5 draft in December. Considering that he's pitched just 13.2 innings above Low-A, Alvarez is likely headed back to the minors, perhaps until September of 2015 barring another stretch of dominance as he moves through the upper levels of the Mets' system.
