Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
Edwards did not pitch in the big leagues in 2016 as he was shelved with a flexor strain that he suffered in spring training. He attempted to rehab and return late in the first half, but suffered a setback after one appearance in the California League. The Padres were pushing Edwards through rehab work in the fall as the regular season came to a close and he was sitting at 93 mph with his fastball. If he's healthy when spring training begins, Edwards figures to be in the mix for a spot in the San Diego bullpen, but his only glimmer of steady control came at Triple-A in 2015 (2.3 BB/9), and that ongoing problem puts a damper on the strikeout upside he possesses. At age 29, Edwards is guaranteed nothing given the lack of a track record and that he's coming off of a lost season.
Edwards, a long-time fixture in the Rangers organization, was the "player to be named later" in a midseason deal that sent Will Venable over from San Diego. After notching three saves in five appearances with the Padres' Triple-A affiliate, Edwards joined the big league club in September when rosters expanded. He made 11 appearances, striking out 16 of the 44 batters he faced to finish with a 13.5 K/9 in the last month of the season. After the Padres overhauled their bullpen by dealing Craig Kimbrel and Joaquin Benoit, Edwards' chances at being a valuable member of the bullpen have significantly improved. The closer situation is unsettled, and with flamethrower Brandon Maurer and the reliable Kevin Quackenbush also vying for the role, Edwards faces an uphill battle at winning the job out of spring training. That said, Edwards' strong finish to 2015 should net him an important role in the bullpen in 2016.
