ANALYSIS
The 16-year-old switch-hitter was ranked No. 7 on Baseball America's international prospects list. He will likely move off shortstop to second or third base, but his bat should be able to play anywhere.

A switch-hitting shortstop out of Venezuela, Garcia is only just beginning to scratch the surface of his potential. Just one year after a scintillating debut as a 17-year-old in the Gulf Coast League, Garcia had a down season in the Appalachian League at Pulaski, not looking quite as polished as hoped. His strikeouts went up, his walks went down and his struggles on the basepaths were evident as well. Garcia still has upside, but his bat was supposed to separate him from several other young middle-infield prospects in the Yankees' organization. At only 18 years of age, Garcia is a long-term project.
Garcia made his professional debut at just 17 years old, spending the 2015 season in rookie ball. He was lacking in the power department, as he didn't hit a home run in 37 games, but posted a respectable .281 average and got on base at a very impressive .396 clip. The switch-hitter possesses a good eye at the plate, walking 24 times, compared to just 19 strikeouts, and has plus speed on the bases. Garcia still has a while to go until he progresses to even the higher levels of the minors, so it is too early to worry about him potentially being blocked by Didi Gregorius or top prospect Jorge Mateo down the road. For the time being, Garcia should head back to rookie ball, with the potential to get a promotion to short-season Staten Island by the end of the year.
