Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
2019
At the catcher position, we're often forced to circle back and give players second and third looks in hopes of uncovering a C2 that is not a net negative. Greiner has played in parts of three seasons and the bat is so anemic that fantasy players can safely move on with no chance of regretting it.
In 340 major-league plate appearances, Greiner has a 54 wRC+. The league average is 100, which tells you just how far away he is from being a productive fantasy asset. In the minors, he showed OBP chops and used the ballpark in Erie to his advantage as all Detroit hitters passing through Double-A do. At the major-league level, the .207/.277/.299 triple-slash line leaves so much to be desired. He will likely be the backup in Detroit once again this season, but even deep AL-only leaguers shouldn't bother with this guy unless in-season injuries to the position dictate otherwise.
Greiner looks to be the Tigers' primary catcher this season with James McCann non-tendered and no other appealing alternatives on the roster. The unusually tall (6-foot-6) backstop posted a promising .266/.350/.405 line in 46 games at Triple-A Toledo last season but looked like a backup in his first taste of big-league action. That performance wasn't significantly out of line with Greiner's prospect reports, as he never had significant hype. He was supposed to have a bit of power, and he regularly ran slugging percentages above .400 in the minors, but he couldn't manage a single homer in his time with the Tigers. There's at least a bit of hope he could provide some power this season, as his 87.9 mph average exit velocity ranked in the middle of the pack last season. Greiner is very much in the mix in AL-only leagues simply due to his playing time but will need to tap into that power to have broader appeal.

May receive another chance in 2021
CDetroit Tigers
October 2, 2020
GM Al Avila indicated Greiner could be competing for a spot on the roster in spring training, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old appeared to be a logical candidate to be designated for assignment this offseason, but he could end up receiving another opportunity in Detroit. Greiner appeared in 18 games this season and had an .118/.182/.333 slash line with 20 strikeouts in 55 plate appearances, and his .577 OPS over the previous two seasons isn't much of an improvement. Even if Greiner ends up seeing sporadic playing time in 2021, he'd need to illustrate a massive turnaround before becoming a fantasy option.
