Casey Gillaspie

It's hard to have a worse year as a first base prospect than Gillaspie had in 2017. In his age-24 season he hit .223/.297/.373 with 15 home runs and 100 strikeouts in 125 games at Triple-A. The Rays gave up on Gillaspie completely, shipping him to the White Sox for reliever Dan Jennings in a late-July deal. A rebuilding team like Chicago is exactly the type of team that should take a shot on post-hype prospect with pedigree (first-round pick in 2014) like Gillaspie, but even they probably expect to designate him for assignment in a year or two. It could be argued that Gillaspie's .249 BABIP should warrant a mulligan. However, first-base-only prospects entering their age-25 season don't get mulligans. They need to hit. They always need to hit. And when they don't, we can all but close the book on them ever providing fantasy value. Gillaspie will probably get his shot in the majors at some point in 2017, likely hovering around the Mendoza Line while hitting a handful of home runs.
