Rest-of-Season Projections
Makes return Thursday
Kolek got the start Thursday for the GCL Marlins, his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2016.
ANALYSIS
The outing wasn't exactly a rousing success -- Kolek recorded only one out and was charged with four runs on a hit and two walks -- but the important thing is that he's pitching again. The 21-year-old right-hander was the second overall pick in 2014 and struggled with his control prior to surgery, so expect him to focus simply on building up some innings for the rest of the season rather than making any kind of rapid ascent up the ladder in the Marlins' system.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2015
This is a classic case of projection versus results. The Marlins obviously believed in Kolek’s potential when he was selected with the second overall pick in the 2014 draft, and everyone knows that he throws really, really hard. Unfortunately, he has not shown the ability to consistently do anything else well as a pro. Kolek was expected to be a bit of a project, as perhaps more than any other highly touted pitching prospect, he is known as a thrower, and not a pitcher. However, in dynasty leagues, the lead time and risk associated with waiting on Kolek to figure it out makes him a borderline option in most formats. He had 81 strikeouts and 61 walks in 108.2 innings last season at Low-A and has yet to post an ERA under 4.50 as a pro. Kolek still has size (6-foot-5, 260 pounds), youth (entering his age-20 season), and a big fastball on his side, but there are plenty of pitchers in the lower levels that have much less risk and a similar amount of upside.
