It was ultimately a disappointing 2022 campaign for Reyes, though he did show some flashes of potential. In 70 games with Cleveland, he registered a .603 OPS with a 37 percent strikeout rate. The Guardians decided they had seen enough, so they designated Reyes for assignment in August. The slugger latched on with the Cubs and got off to a hot start with his new team, posting a 1.007 OPS across his first 10 games. However, by the end of the season, his OPS dipped to .689 over 48 games in Chicago. Overall, it was a significant departure from the .846 OPS he recorded in 2021, and he also saw his home run total fall from 30 to 14. His decline saw him sign just an NRI deal with the Royals. If he does make the squad in Kansas City, it will probably be as a part-time designated hitter and bench bat. He can also handle a bit of corner-outfield work, though most defensive metrics would advise against it.

Demotion coming?
Reyes is expected to be optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday, reports Mandy Bell of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
It has been a hugely disappointing season for Reyes coming off four above-average offensive seasons. The 26-year-old has produced a .213/.254/.350 line with nine homers and 104 strikeouts in 280 plate appearances. He's even struggled against left-handed pitching, posting a .445 OPS with only one homer in 69 plate appearances versus southpaws. With the Guardians in the thick of a postseason race, the demotion of Reyes is likely intended to give him a chance to work out the kinks in hopes that he will return to Cleveland later this season as a productive slugger.
