Heads to Mexican League
3BFree Agent
February 15, 2021
Lugo signed a contract Monday with the Guadalajara Mariachis of the Mexican League.
ANALYSIS
Lugo will continue his career outside of affiliated ball after he elected free agency in November, just over two months after the Tigers booted him from the 40-man roster. The Mexican League season isn't scheduled to get underway until the summer, so Lugo is unlikely to resurface in the majors in 2021 even if he plays well for the Guadalajara club. The 26-year-old infielder failed to impress in multiple stints at the big-league level with Detroit over the past three seasons, slashing a collective .236/.270/.358 with seven home runs in 400 career plate appearances.

Lugo was one of many players to be given a decent run by the rebuilding Tigers, and like most of them, he failed to impress. In 77 games at the big-league level, he hit just .245/.271/.381 with six homers. His offense was generally poor across the board, but his 2.8 BB% stands out as particularly bad. He was a very different player for Triple-A Toledo, hitting .333/.370/.489 after looking overmatched there the season prior. Lugo isn't quite a true utility infielder, as he can't play shortstop. That makes it harder for him to earn a bench spot and puts more pressure on a bat that hasn't looked capable of carrying him to a starting role. He should still receive opportunities this year, as he'll be just 25 years old and the Tigers don't appear likely to suddenly fill their roster with proven talent. What he does in those chances probably won't interest fantasy owners in most leagues, however.
Lugo didn't do much in his first taste of big-league action last season, hitting an unimpressive .213/.267/.309 with one homer in 101 plate appearances. Even on a rebuilding Tigers club, he's probably on the outside looking in to begin the 2019 campaign. His Triple-A numbers (.269/.283/.350 in 123 games for Toledo) don't offer much reason for excitement long term. Lugo did profile as a fringe starter as a prospect earlier in his career, with plus raw power but questions about his ability to stick at second base and his ability to get to that power in games. At age 24, it's too early to give up on him completely. The rebuilding Tigers have plenty of at-bats to go around, so it will only take a small improvement at Triple-A for Lugo to earn playing time.
Lugo came over to the Diamondbacks organization in 2015 from Toronto in exchange for Cliff Pennington. Considered a fringe prospect before the trade, Lugo has actually made a pretty good impression with his new team, and he's now among the top pieces in Arizona's below-average farm system. In his first full season with the organization, Lugo hit .311/.339/.492 in 488 at-bats across High-A Visalia and Double-A Mobile. He also surged to a combined 17 home runs, matching his total from his first four minor league seasons. At age 22, Lugo is still filling in his 6-foot frame, so the power production could continue to increase. Lugo primarily played third base last season, though he also saw some time at shortstop. Expect him to start the season at Double-A Jackson as the organization takes a longer look at what he can do at the level.
