ANALYSIS
After posting a 6.15 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 26.1 innings at the big-league level with the Royals in 2023, Mayers was forced to settle for a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays in free agency this offseason. The 32-year-old right-hander didn't perform well enough at Triple-A Buffalo this season to garner a look with the big club before he was cut loose, as he logged a 6.10 ERA and 1.63 WHIP across 41.1 innings in the International League.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2017
It took six seasons, but Mayers finally became fantasy relevant while working at the back end of the Angels' bullpen. Manager Joe Maddon went to him quite frequently over the course of the season, allowing Mayers to pick up five wins and two saves while striking out 90. The ratios held down his fantasy value, as did the fact that Raisel Iglesias was around all season in dominant fashion. The fact Iglesias re-signed with the club further cements Mayers into a middle-relief role, and he would become a stronger insurance policy if he could keep his homers (1.4 HR/9 career) under control. The expected stats show both his fastball and cutter should have performed better, but a rough May (7.71 ERA, 2.06 WHIP) was tough to overcome. He should have a similar role this season, but you can wait until the reserve rounds to roster him in deeper formats.
Relievers can pop up out of nowhere, and that's seemingly what Mayers did in the short 2020 campaign. After posting a 7.03 ERA in 80.2 career innings prior to last season, he broke out as a 28-year-old to toss 30.0 innings with a 2.10 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. While a .242 BABIP certainly didn't hurt, he deserves the majority of the credit for his excellent numbers. He posted a poor 18.7 K% through 2019 but saw that number spike to 35.5% last season, a number he paired with a 7.4 BB%. That's a dramatic shift, but he added an entirely new pitch to his arsenal, throwing his new cutter nearly a quarter of the time, so there's a good chance the improvements stick. A low 32.8% groundball rate hints at potential homer problems in the future, but overall he looks legitimately like a high-leverage arm. The Angels' acquisition of Raisel Iglesias means he won't pick up saves to start the year, but he should be next in line.
Mayers put together a modest 3.73 ERA and 1.32 WHP over 16 starts at Triple-A Memphis in 2016, but there is little reason to think he'll be used as a starter in the big leagues. He stumbled in his brief taste with St. Louis, allowing a whopping 16 runs over 5.1 innings spread across four treacherous outings, three of which came in September after rosters expanded. Coming off that brutal display, the odds are stacked against Mayers starting the season in the majors, let alone making his way up before the All-Star break. While in the minors, Mayers will look to improve his control, which has hindered his performance at every level. Between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis in 2016, Mayers logged a 3.0 BB/9.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could start Monday
PKansas City Royals
June 4, 2023
The Royals have yet to announce a starter for Monday's game against the Marlins, and Mayers could be in the mix to pitch, per Anne Rogers of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old followed an opener last Monday against the Cardinals and delivered six scoreless innings, and he could be called upon again in Miami. Mayers hasn't pitched since that game May 29, so he should be fully available unless he's used out of the bullpen Sunday versus the Rockies. The right-hander has pitched well since being called up May 17 and has a 1.35 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB across 13.1 frames.
