Brice announced Wednesday via social media that he has retired from professional baseball.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old's announcement came two days after Triple-A St. Paul placed him on its voluntarily retired list. The right-hander didn't see any big-league action this season between stints in the Phillies and Twins organizations and turned in an ugly 12.00 ERA over 15 innings between the Triple-A and Double-A levels. Brice previously made 144 appearances in the majors from 2016 through 2022, logging a 5.12 ERA while collecting four wins and 16 holds over 168.2 innings across stops with the Marlins, Reds, Red Sox and Pirates.

The Red Sox acquired Brice in January of 2020 after the Marlins designated him for assignment. He ended the 2019 season on the IL with a forearm strain and ended 2020 on the IL with a lat strain, struggling in between to the tune of a 5.95 ERA over 19.2 innings. The estimators are a bit kinder to him on account of a 28.7 K%. Brice has used the curveball as his primary pitch the past two seasons and has pitched backward in a sense, sneaking the fastball past hitters for the majority of his strikeouts (40 of 71). Clearly the Red Sox see some promise as they tendered him a contract and later signed Brice for $870,000 for 2021, avoiding arbitration. Fantasy expectations should be basically nil and real-life expectations modest; after all, Brice is still looking for his first sustained success at the major-league level.
This is Brice's second stint with the Marlins after stops with the Reds, Angels and Orioles without a pitch thrown for the last two on that list. Brice's speciality is a very high spin rate curveball, which he threw 45% of the time last year. He uses a stiff low arm slot delivery to sling the ball to the plate which makes it tough on righties to pick him up as evidenced by their .192/.274/.327 slash line against him last season. He is more susceptible to damage against lefties (.246/.366/.420), but this may all be for naught as his season ended in late August due to a forearm strain. Just watching his delivery makes it easy to see how his arm got into that condition.
Brice transition to a relief role in June and got his first callup to the majors two months later. His 14 big league innings could have gone better, as he finished the season with a 7.07 ERA and 4.50 FIP, but Brice took a step forward with his control. He walked 24 batters in 72 innings as a starter for Double-A Jacksonville, adding up to a 3.0 BB/9 that would represent the best mark of his minor league career. Once he moved to the bullpen, he reined the ball in even more with a 1.8 BB/9 between Jacksonville and Triple-A New Orleans. If he keeps that progress up, he could earn a regular role in the big league bullpen for 2017, especially now that he's in a Reds organization that's lacking in big-league-ready arms.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
May move before trade deadline
PMiami Marlins
July 15, 2019
Brice may receive attention for a potential trade before the July 31 deadline, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com speculates.
ANALYSIS
The righty is one of several Marlins relievers who could be on the move, including Nick Anderson -- also a potential closer if Sergio Romo is dealt -- and lefty Jarlin Garcia. Brice, for his own right, has quieted the opposition with a 1.88 ERA, 8.9 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9. The underlying peripherals don't say he's overly dominant, but he still could provide useful depth for a contender's middle reliever corps. Brice probably won't land in a spot in which he'll suddenly discover fantasy relevance, though.
