Behind the Backstop: Roster Shuffle Review
November 27, 2013
After an impressive campaign at Double-A, Domingo Santana is inching closer to the big leagues after being added to the Astros' 40-man roster. Tory Hernandez takes a closer look at the players that teams wanted to protect from the Rule 5 draft.
Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2014
The 27-year-old O'Neill logged 263 at-bats between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis last year, slashing .289/.400/.319 while serving as the primary left fielder at each level. His career slash of .311/.412/.381 certainly doesn't fit the profile of a typical corner outfielder and likely won't earn him regular time at the major league level, but it's possible he could develop into a nice bench player. He possesses a great batting eye and terrific on-base ability, though with very little pop as indicated by his four career home runs. Still, O'Neill likely will serve as outfield organizational depth between Triple-A and Double-A when needed with the occasional callup to the big leagues should a rash of injuries require it.
O'Neill has been excellent at getting on base during his time in the minor leagues, posting a .435 OBP in four minor league seasons, which is a big reason the Cardinals' added him to their 40-man roster going into the 2014 season. The 25-year-old doesn't come with much excitement, but he's consistent and reliable and should provide depth as a bench player if he ends up spending time in St. Louis in 2014.
