2013
Geltz endured the worst season of his career in 2016, giving up 11 homers in just 26.2 innings and posting a bloated 5.74 ERA and 5.42 xFIP. The 28-year-old right-hander's track record through a long minor league career and two stints at the big league level in prior seasons in Tampa afford him some slack, particularly the 20 holds he tallied with the Rays in 2015. However, there may not be room for Geltz come 2017 in what figures to be a competitive Tampa bullpen situation during spring training.
While he wasn’t the most efficient pitcher for the Rays, with a 3.74 ERA, Geltz was most certainly a favorite option out of the bullpen for manager Kevin Cash. He finished with 70 total appearances, good for top 10 in the AL, and would have likely finished with more had the team not decided to limit his workload in September. The 28-year-old was used in just about every short-relief role possible, including two, two-inning starts when Cash wanted to support a weak starter by hiding him from the top of the order. Between his 93 mph fastball and 28 years of age, it’s not likely Geltz develops into a late-inning arm, but he can at least rest easy knowing he delivers a strong amount of innings for a bullpen that usually needs it in middle relief. Look for a similar role in 2016 for Geltz, with some chance at setup opportunities if the bullpen gets shaken up.
This small reliever has grinded his way through the minors. He has pitched in 241 games in his minor league career, but has held his own in the upper levels striking out 174 batters and allowing 95 hits in 144 innings of Triple-A work. He has enough stuff to stick around in a major league bullpen, but he is better off in low leverage work. While the Triple-A numbers are attractive, they do not truly represent the type of pitcher he will be at the major league level. He has low leverage ROOGY written all over him.
Geltz only tossed two innings for the Angels last year, and had a 5.08 ERA in 33.2 innings at the Triple-A level despite a fairly impressive 33:14 K:BB, but he was absolutely dominant for Double-A Arkansas, posting a 0.36 ERA and 37:6 K:BB in only 25.1 innings. Geltz is only 5-foot-10 and may be a bit underrated because of his diminutive stature for a pitcher, but he should have every chance to earn a spot in the bullpen if he pitches well during spring training.
