Re-signs with Angels
Dayton re-signed a minor-league deal with the Angels on Wednesday and was assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake.
ANALYSIS
After originally latching on with the Angels in May, Dayton had the option of opting out of his minor-league contract to pursue a big-league opportunity elsewhere. Instead, the veteran reliever decided to remain with Los Angeles. The southpaw has posted a 2.61 ERA, 0..92 WHIP and 29:6 K:BB across 20.2 innings with two Triple-A clubs this season and figures to be near the front of the line for a call-up if the Angels need a left-handed reliever.

Dayton missed the entire 2018 season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He clawed back to the majors with Atlanta, pitching 12 innings in 2019 before settling in as a bullpen regular in 2020. The lefty took the ball 18 times for the Braves during the shortened 2020 regular season, pitching to a 2.30 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, albeit without a save or even a single hold to show for his efforts as manager Brian Snitker had two lefties he trusted more (Will Smith and A.J. Minter) available to him for most of the season. Dayton does not throw particularly hard, but he has shown an ability to get whiffs with his fastball-curveball combination (27.4 K% last season). While the 33-year-old Dayton has handled righties capably in his career, it's clear he's not going to sniff the late innings in Atlanta.

Nearing deal with Angels
Dayton is closing in on a contract with the Angels, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dayton signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins during the offseason and posted a 2.35 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 15.1 innings over 12 appearances at Triple-A Jacksonville before opting out in mid-May. It's not yet clear whether the southpaw's agreement with the Angels will be a major-league deal, but it's unlikely that he'd have a high-leverage role if he joined the big-league bullpen.
