Montgomery signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Friday, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery previously spent the first half of the 2018 campaign with Detroit's Triple-A club before being released earlier this month. Across 12 appearances with Toledo, he logged a 1.98 ERA and 1.89 WHIP with 17 strikeouts in 13.2 innings of relief. He will provide additional minor-league depth for Boston, as the 27-year-old has yet to pitch in the majors over the course of his career.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2014
2013
Montgomery dominated in the low minors for the first few years of his career, but he was derailed by shoulder issues in 2013 (perhaps accelerated by a combination of poor conditioning and a May 15th outing where he threw 3.1 innings). While he still put up a strong strikeout rate at Triple-A, punching out 49 in 40 innings, he ended up on the disabled list on three separate occasions, and never really managed to get his season on track. Montgomery brings excellent power stuff to the table, but his fastball can get flat at times. If he can stay healthy and improve his command, he could get himself back on the fast track to the majors. A late-inning role in the Yankees' bullpen as soon as this year is not out of the question.
Montgomery has impressed in the Yankees' system since being drafted in the 11th round out of Longwood University in 2011. His first full professional season included stops at High-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton, where he carried a combined 13.8 K/9 in 64.1 innings. After struggling with walks upon signing in 2011, his control improved at both stops, including a 2.2 BB/9 at Double-A. Montgomery's season culminated with time in the Arizona Fall League, where he was selected to pitch in the Rising Stars Game and put his plus-slider on full display. Look for him to return to Trenton to begin the season, but Montgomery could break through and become a viable late-inning option in the second half of 2013.
