Garcia was released from his minor-league contract with the Royals on Monday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garcia spent most of the 2017 campaign in the minors, though he earned a brief promotion at the end of August before being designated for assignment shortly thereafter. The 28-year-old struggled during his time in the majors, allowing nine runs on 12 hits and five walks while striking out two batters across six innings of work. He's reportedly heading overseas to pitch in Japan next year, though specifics remain unknown at this point.

The White Sox claimed Garcia off of waivers in November, as the Dodgers simply couldn't wait any longer for him to return from elbow surgery. He was expected to be ready for the start of spring training last season, but Garcia fell behind and never made it back to the big leagues after getting a taste of Los Angeles in 2013. Prior to undergoing surgery, Garcia could bring mid-90s heat from the left side, and the 25-year-old has a much clearer path to an Opening Day roster spot on the south side of Chicago. Of major concern, in addition to health, is that Garcia has always struggled with walks, as he issued them at a 5.5 BB/9 clip while spending most of his last healthy season at Double-A. He still has options left, so the White Sox can afford to send him down to Triple-A without exposing him to waivers as long as they're willing to keep him on their 40-man roster.
Garcia made his big league debut in September, getting in three games for the Dodgers after posting a 2.90 ERA with a 67:35 K:BB ratio in 62 minor league innings. It appears he's now a full-time reliever, and being left-handed with a fastball that runs up as high as 95 mph could allow Garcia to have a nice career. He underwent a cleanup operation on his pitching elbow in November, but Garcia should be ready to compete for a bullpen role this spring.
