Gets chance with Halos
Thompson agreed to a minor-league contract with the Angels earlier this month, Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Thompson will join the Halos for spring training after an underwhelming 2019. He opened the past season with the Lotte Giants of the KBO League before being cut by the South Korean club and latching on with the Tigers on a minor-league deal. Thompson was at least able to end his campaign on a high note with an eight-inning, 13-strikeout performance for Double-A Erie on Aug. 30, so the Angels will presumably give him a look this spring and determine if he's a viable rotation option for their Pacific Coast or Southern League affiliates.

Thompson posted a 3.88 ERA in 46.1 innings, a fine number for a 23-year-old in his sophomore season. His performances did not back up that ERA, however, as he struck out far too few batters (6.8 K/9) while walking far too many (4.3 BB/9). His 5.92 FIP indicates that his ERA was very lucky and could easily have been far higher. Thompson has youth and prospect pedigree on his side, but his performances will have to improve considerably for him to have a successful MLB career. Thompson's Triple-A strikeout numbers (6.9 K/9) were nearly identical to those he posted in the majors, which doesn't give much cause for optimism, though his walk rate was slightly better (3.6 BB/9), suggesting that there's hope for improvement in at least one area. Thompson will be given another opportunity to start for the rebuilding Phillies, but if his underlying numbers don't improve, he could find himself spending most of the season in the minors again.
