The Cardinals signed Roache to a minor-league contract last week, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
A first-round pick of the Brewers in 2012, Roache was dealt to the Dodgers last May and struggled for their High-A affiliate at Rancho Cucamonga, slashing .192/.257/.416 in 136 plate appearances. Though he's displayed some intriguing power during his minor-league career and has a strong pedigree, Roache's poor contact skills make it unlikely that he'll ever surface at the major-league level.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2015
2014
2013
Roache has delivered on the power potential that made him a first-round pick with 40 home runs through his first two seasons as a pro. However, contact is an issue, as Roache posted a 37:138 BB:K ratio and .298 OBP last season. Roache will be given plenty of chances to succeed given his draft slot, but he is going to have to have make some strides at the plate over the next few seasons to remain a promising prospect.
Roache had a streaky 2013 campaign and struck out 137 times in 459 at-bats, but he flashed the power that made him a first-round pick in 2011, accumulating 40 extra-base hits over the course of the campaign. Roache will be entering his age-22 season in 2014, so there’s plenty of reason for the Brewers to be excited about their young outfielder. It remains to be seen if he will open with Low-A Wisconsin in 2014, or make the jump to the High-A level.
Knowing full well that he had suffered a serious wrist injury in February, the Brewers still selected Roache in the first round of the 2012 draft. The Brewers' risky selection did not come without reason; however, as Roach hit an impressive 30 home runs in 62 games as a sophomore at Georgia Tech in 2011. Roache's power could make him a steal for the Brewers if he can fully recover from his broken wrist, but we will have to see him make his full-season debut before getting a good read on where he is at with respect to the injury.
