Hawkins signed a minor-league contract with the Reds that includes an invitation to spring training.
ANALYSIS
Hawkins finished out the 2018 campaign with Cincinnati's High-A affiliate after being cut loose by the White Sox and subsequently spending time in the independent Atlantic League. While he struggled during his time in the minors, the 25-year-old hit .285/.342/.505 with 18 homers and 12 steals in 88 games for the Sugar Land Skeeters. Hawkins has yet to appear above Double-A, where he owns a .209/.265/.355 slash line across parts of four seasons (273 games), so look for him to serve as organizational outfield depth.

2013
Hawkins made it to Double-A for the first time in 2015, but plantar fasciitis cut his season short in July and forced him to miss the Arizona Fall League. Prior to the injury, he continued a trend of low on-base percentages, high strikeout totals and enchanting power potential. Just 22 years old, he is still young and has time to turn things around, but he will need to do so quickly to avoid a being labeled a flame-out. Look for him to repeat Double-A to begin 2016, with the hope of being promoted to the International League before season's end if he can cut back on the whiffs (30.3-percent K rate in 2015) and provide a more palatable on-base percentage (career-high .331 OBP at High-A in 2014).
For about one month, it looked like Hawkins was ready to put the nightmare that was the 2013 season behind him. He had a .358 OBP and seven home runs by the end of April, and it looked like he might be living up to his talent. However, he hit no more than four home runs in any subsequent month, and struck out at a 27.8% rate on the year. He still has the tools to be a serviceable player, but they may take a while longer to come together.
The organization may have rushed Hawkins into High-A action, and he closed the season with 160 strikeouts and a sub-.200 batting average. He missed nearly all of May due to a strained rotator cuff, but he was still able to hit 12 of his 19 home runs on the season in the 80 games after the injury. The tools are still here, but it may take him a bit longer to reach the majors than initially anticipated. Expect him to repeat the level, with the chance to reach Double-A by season's end if the plate discipline improves.
The White Sox selected Hawkins 13th overall in the 2012 draft. He displayed athleticism right away, pulling off a back flip in MLB Network studios while wearing a full suit. He progressed to the High-A Level in a half-season of professional ball, which is no small feat for a player who turned 19 in the offseason. Hawkins accumulated a .324 OBP across three minor league levels, and he hit eight home runs and stole 11 bases in 229 at-bats. He will likely play out 2013 at Low-A or High-A, possibly splitting time between those levels and it will be interesting to see how his power develops as he progresses through the White Sox organization.
