Outrighted to Triple-A

August 25, 2018
Schugel (shoulder) was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list Saturday and outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis.
ANALYSIS
Schugel, who hasn't pitched at the big-league level this season, has a 6.19 ERA in 16 innings split between Indianapolis and High-A Bradenton. Since he's not on the 40-man roster, it's unlikely that the 29-year-old will be called up in September.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2017
Close your eyes and imagine yourself in beautiful PNC Park. It's the top of the seventh inning, there is one out, and a righty batter is coming up with men on first and second. Clint Hurdle comes out to yank the tiring starting pitcher as he needs a groundball double-play to get out of the inning. There is one man for this job, and it's Schugel. The righty reliever is very tough on righties and pitches with a groundball tilt. This is the role he is made for. As good as he is against righties, he does not have a brighter future because lefties see him very well. When used properly, as he was last year, he can be very effective. Just don't expect that 1.97 ERA to hang around because only the most elite relievers can strand 91 percent of runners as Schugel did in 2017.
Schugel bounced between Triple-A Indianapolis and Pittsburgh in 2016, but he looked pretty good when he took the mound at PNC Park. Considering the 27-year-old righty had only five major league games to his credit before the season, he threw well. The righty also showed good command with a 46:13 K:BB. Inflammation to his pitching shoulder ended his season in late August, but he should be fine for 2017. Schugel finished 11 games last summer, but he hasn't been tested in many high-leverage spots. He's set to begin the season as a middle-inning reliever with the potential for fantasy holds.
