Martin was on the move before the season even began, as he was claimed off waivers by the Mariners last offseason. His past numbers didn't jump off the page, so he was dumped to the depths of Triple-A Tacoma to act as organizational pitching depth. The right-hander went on to quietly produce during his time with the Rainiers, posting a 3.62 ERA and 1.22 WHIP to go with a solid 114:33 K:BB scattered across 20 starts and five relief appearances. This strong showing allowed him to reach the big leagues for a few short stints during the season, where he seemed to hold his own. His ERA sat at a passable 3.86 mark after two starts and seven outings as a reliever, but the home run continued to kill him (1.8 HR/9) while his strikeout numbers sunk with the uptick in hitting talent. Martin's ability to step in as a spot starter should keep him near the big leagues, but his lack of consistent production will likely keep him irrelevant in fantasy.
Martin has gone from pitching out of the bullpen early in his career through a transition to the starting rotation, and then back to relief work last season in 25 appearances between Braves and A's. In either role, though, he has struggled over the last couple of seasons, posting a 6.04 FIP last year on a 3.5 BB/9 and a whopping 2.4 HR/9. His fastball averaged only 89.2 mph last season, but he also throws a cutter, curveball and changeup. The Mariners took a flier on him in October, picking him up off waivers. He'll compete for a bullpen job in spring training, likely in long relief.
Perhaps Martin doesn't have the upside of some of the arms ahead of him in the Braves' system, but the right-hander has proved serviceable in the rotation since transitioning from the bullpen in 2012. In his first full season at the Triple-A level in 2014, Martin went 7-8 with a 3.52 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 142:56 K:BB over 156 innings, flashing a potential plus cutter, a fastball which typically sits in the low-90s, a curveball and a changeup. He trimmed his walk rate by more than two percent (from 10.6% to 8.4%) while maintaining a strikeout rate above 20 percent (21.3%), but Martin's issues keeping the ball on the ground (0.79 career GO/AO) finally caught up to him, as he allowed 17 homers, more than he gave up in his previous two seasons combined. Chances are, the 25-year-old will begin 2015 back at Gwinnett, but he could be a long-relief or spot-start option for the big club later in the year.
