Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
Araujo failed to win a bullpen spot last spring, but was one of the first relievers the Phillies recalled from the minors. He stuck around in the majors for most of the season because the Phillies lacked solid options to fill a lefty relief role. Surprisingly, he was used to face more right-handed batters than lefties and the righties hit him hard. Araujo will turn 26 this season, so there is still time for him to find his niche in the majors, but he has decided to try his luck in Japan in 2017. He has to cut down on his walks.
Araujo received a major league deal from the Phillies last offseason despite the fact that he never made it above Double-A while with Cleveland. He started the year off at Double-A Reading, but was promoted to the majors after just seven games. By the middle of the season, he had become the Phillies' primary left-handed reliever. He was effective against both lefties and righties, but did walk a few too many batters. A groin injury ended his season prematurely, but he was back in action in the Venezuelan Winter League during the offseason. He should prove to be a valuable piece of the Phillies' bullpen again this season, but the holds may be few and far between on a Philadelphia team that is no lock to reach even 60 wins.
