Clears waivers
Miller (elbow) cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
ANALYSIS
Miller was designated for assignment early in the week, but he'll remain with the Cardinals' organization for now after going unclaimed on waivers. It's not yet clear whether the 34-year-old's right elbow strain -- which he suffered in late September -- will affect his availability for spring training in 2022.

After not appearing in the majors in 2017, Miller spent the offseason working on conditioning and mechanics. He was signed to a minor-league deal by the Nationals, ostensibly for organizational depth. Miller began with Triple-A Syracuse. With the help of a newfound 95-mph fastball, Miller didn't allow a run in 13 innings, surrendering just three hits and three walks while fanning 23, prompting a late-May promotion. Miller picked up where he left off, tossing 10.2 more scoreless frames before giving up his first run June 15. That outing was the first of five straight in which Miller allowed a run. Through the break, Miller posted a 36.9 K%, but after, it was chopped in half at 18.3% even as he maintained his velocity throughout the entire campaign. The Nationals have fortified their bullpen, perhaps pushing Miller into seventh-inning duty.
