Following an injury to starter Devin Mesoraco, the window opened for Cabrera to stay on the major league roster as the backup option behind Tucker Barnhart, and the 27-year-old wound up appearing in 61 games for Cincinnati. He never profiled as a particularly flashy hitter in the minors, as his biggest strength had always been his plate discipline -- something that abandoned him in 2016 as he drew just eight walks against 30 strikeouts in 185 plate appearances. With Mesoraco and Barnhart both set to return in 2017, there wasn't much room for Cabrera on the roster and he became a free agent after the Reds declined to tender him a contract. Now a member of the Marlins, he still seems to be fourth in the pecking order for catching opportunities in Miami, leaving him to spend another season in an organizational depth role.
Cabrera has spent the bulk of the last three seasons at the Triple-A level in the Tigers, Pirates and Reds organizations. He got a token callup in September by the Reds in 2015, but he doesn't profile to be much more than an organizational soldier again 2016, lining up behind Devin Mesoraco and Tucker Barnhart.
The Pirates claimed Cabrera off waivers from Detroit in August, re-acquiring the catcher after he spent two years in the Tigers' organization. The 25-year-old has struggled to recapture the offensive flair he showed for High-A Bradenton in 2011, when he led the Florida State League in batting with a .343 mark in 379 plate appearances. In 2014, he batted a combined .273/.325/.364 in 480 Double-A plate appearances. A career 249:267 BB:K ratio in the minor leagues highlights his discipline in the batter's box, but an inability to stick at the Triple-A level limits his projection. He'll likely serve as organizational depth again in 2015.
At this young stage of his career, Cabrera is an all-hit, no-field catcher. While that sounds tempting to fantasy leaguers, he'll need to learn the finer art of defense behind the plate before he advances to Pittsburgh. There's a chance he could pass Tony Sanchez as the organization's top catching prospect, but 2012 will represent Cabrera's first showing at Double-A. The potential is there, as evidenced by his .343/.410/.471 line in 327 at-bats at High-A as a 21 year-old in 2011.
