Schwimer split time between Triple-A and the majors last season. He struggled a bit with his command while with the Phillies, but also showed enough to keep himself in the team's plans for 2013. Schwimer works in the low-90s and relies on a funky delivery to help keep hitters off balance. A disagreement with Phillies management about the health of his shoulder ended his season on a bit of a sour note. He told the team he could not pitch due to some inflammation in his rotator cuff, but the team said he was healthy enough to pitch. It remains to be seen if that will have any impact on his future with the club or if the two sides will put the issue behind them.
Schwimer put together a very good year at Triple-A last season and found his way to Philly late in the year where he worked mostly in low leverage situations. Schwimer works in the low-90s and relies on a funky delivery to help keep hitters off balance. His strikeout rate carried over to the majors, but he also struggled with his control. He will have a chance to earn a bullpen job with the Phillies this spring but may find himself headed back to Triple-A for some additional work at the start of the regular season.
Schwimer finished last year 7-5 with a 2.85 and a 76:21 K:BB ratio in 60 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. Schwimer suffered a lower back injury in August but there is no indication that the injury is severe. The Phillies have invited Schwimer to spring training and will give him an opportunity to earn a bullpen job. He's probably going to open the year back in the minors but could see time in the Phillies' pen later this season.
