Den Dekker announced Sunday via his personal Instagram account that he has ended his professional baseball career.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old outfielder entered the professional ranks in 2010, when the Mets selected him in the fifth round of the first-year player draft. He reached the big leagues for the first time in 2013 and would go on to spend parts of the six consecutive seasons in the majors with the Mets, Nationals and Tigers, putting together a .223/.305/.337 line over 415 career plate appearances. Den Dekker had spent the current season with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball before stepping away from the independent club in June.

Picked up at the end of spring training last season when the Mets had a roster crunch and the Nationals needed some outfield depth, den Dekker bounced back and forth between Washington and Triple-A Syracuse and made little impact at either stop before making a late-September surge at the plate after the Nats had been eliminated from the playoff picture. The left-handed hitter is an able hand defensively who can play all three outfield positions, a useful skill in an organization with some aging, injury-prone regulars, and while he posted some big numbers in the desert at Triple-A Las Vegas in years past, his offensive production at sea level has always restricted him to a bench role in the majors. Den Dekker will likely head into 2016 as the Nats' fourth outfielder, and with Jayson Werth still penciled in as the left fielder, it's a role that could provide him with a surprising amount of playing time.
Like teammate Kirk Nieuwenhuis, den Dekker's outlook for playing time in 2015 took a hit with the addition of Michael Cuddyer in free agency. If there is a silver lining, it's that Cuddyer is now 36 years old and he has missed 206 games out of a possible 486 over the past three seasons. Juan Lagares earned a Gold Glove in center field for the Mets last season, and Curtis Granderson's contract should secure his playing time as the team's regular option in left. With that, den Dekker and Nieuwenhuis will compete to serve as the team's fourth outfielder this season. During his time with the big club last season, den Dekker showed much improved plate discipline (12.1% BB%, 19.5% K%), but he offers less pop than Nieuwenhuis. Unless the Mets are clear about their expected roles for the duo late in spring training, Nieuwenhuis should be considered the more intriguing speculative target.
Den Dekker missed the beginning of the year with a broken wrist, but still finished his Triple-A campaign with an impressive .302/.371/.492 line over 202 plate appearances for Las Vegas to earn a promotion at the end of August. He saw time in center and right field for the Mets and displayed solid defense, but he struggled offensively to the tune of a .207/.270/.276 line with a 4:23 BB:K in 63 plate appearances. Den Dekker will likely start 2014 back in the minors and profiles as a fourth outfielder.
After posting a .340/.397/.563 line with eight homers and 29 RBI over 58 games at Double-A Binghamton, den Dekker earned a promotion to Triple-A Buffalo. His propensity for striking out and struggles with plate discipline caught up with him for the Bisons, as he posted just a .220/.256/.373 line in 77 games there. Those struggles were a factor in him not getting a September callup. If he can make any progress with his plate discipline, den Dekker's speed and defense could eventualy land him a starting role in center field in New York.
