Ryan Brett

Brett’s debut season lasted all of four at-bats (and three days) before he hit the 15-day DL with a partially dislocated left shoulder. By the time he was healthy, he was firmly buried on the second-base depth chart and spent the rest of 2015 with Triple-A Durham. There’s not much of a chance that changes in the near future either, with Logan Forsythe, Tim Beckham, and Nick Franklin all ahead of Brett at second base and under team control until at least 2018. In order to make the majors again, Brett will need a major shakeup for the Rays at that position or to take a major step forward with his performance. He only hit .247 at Durham without much power or on-base ability to speak of. On the bright side, he was hitting .303 at Double-A Montgomery just a year ago, so he has shown the ability to make consistent hard contact in the past. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old should be considered nothing more than organizational depth entering 2016.

Brett treated Southern League spectators to a laser show last summer with Double-A Montgomery, solidifying his status as one of the top second base prospects in the minors. He spent the entire 2014 season at that level, slashing .303/.346/.448 with eight home runs and 27 steals in 459 plate appearances. His .350 BABIP is worth noting, but he has had above average success on balls in play at each stop, as he has an innate ability to make consistent solid contact. Following the acquisition of Nick Franklin in the David Price trade, Brett may not be on the national radar as a potential second baseman of the future for the Rays, but there are no signs that his stick won’t play at the highest level and he will definitely be able to handle second base defensively. A potential .290 hitter with 10-homer/20-steal potential at second base places Brett squarely in the top-100 prospect rankings entering 2015 for dynasty leagues.
