Kevin Chapman

Chapman was a September call-up for the Astros in 2016, and yielded eight runs in eight innings over nine appearances. He hadn't exactly been dominant for Triple-A Fresno, although his 4.87 ERA in the notoriously hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League isn't all that terrible. A tall lefty who throws in the low 90s, Chapman makes heavy use of his slider, a swing-and-miss pitch that has helped him strike out well over a batter an inning the minor leagues. Chapman has yo-yoed between Houston and Fresno for four straight years now, always vying to be the last lefty in the bullpen. He's been unable to throw strikes consistently at the big league level, and has a BB/9 of at least 4.5 each of those four seasons. At 29 years old, one starts to wonder if Chapman will ever click and become a consistently effective major leaguer, or if he's destined for a career in Triple-A. While the strikeout potential is somewhat intriguing, Chapman likely won't start the year in the majors, and will have limited value in most formats.
