Kendrick Perkins

Perkins, 20, is a two-sport athlete looking to transition to a baseball-only environment. He's a sturdy guy with power potential, but is considered very raw at this stage. The Red Sox organization is building his swing from the ground up and that includes teaching him how to approach at-bats and recognizing pitches. He's on a slow boil, with much work needed to harness his raw tools. We're not looking for much this season, other than seeing him make more consistent contact and for longer stretches. Perkins put together some good at-bats in the latter stage of his 2011 season in the Gulf Coast League and he could land a spot at Low-A Greenville to open 2012.

Perkins, 19, is a two-sport star that was signed away from a commitment to Texas A&M where he was set to play both football and baseball. The potential is there for a plus-power corner outfielder, but he needs a lot of work on his swing, before we even get into the notions of being more selective and not being so pull-happy. It's likely he'll remain in extended spring training for more instruction before he ends up with an assignment. Wherever he lands, we'll be looking at his contact and strikeout rates to get a better read on where he stands developmentally.
