Rest-of-Season Projections
Ruffin, 25, retired on Friday, the Seattle Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Ruffin was a 2010 first-round pick by the Tigers but never met expectations. He came to Seattle as part of the ill-fated Doug Fister trade in 2011 with Charlie Furbush, Casper Wells and Fernando Martinez. Only Furbush remains with the Mariners. The Mariners considered converting him to a starter but removed him from the 40-man roster last offseason. In 22 appearances, seven starts, at Triple-A this season, Ruffin had a 5.31 ERA. He made 24 career major-league appearances, all in relief, posting a 5.60 ERA.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2014
2012
Acquired in 2011 in the Doug Fister trade, Ruffin went to spring training last year with a slight chance to make the Seattle roster. That didn't happen, and then mid-season, after he struggled mightily at Triple-A, the Mariners decided to convert the career reliever to a starter at Double-A Jackson. A groundball pitcher with a low-90s fastball, Ruffin posted a mediocre strikeout rate and a decent walk rate in 16 starts. Back in a relief role for a September callup, Ruffin was pounded in nine appearances (3 HR, 9 ER, 9.2 IP), though he struck out 15 in that small sample. The Mariners took him off the 40-man roster in December and outrighted him to to Triple-A, where he'll likely work as a starter to begin the season. He could perhaps compete for a bullpen spot in spring. Either way, his upside is limited.
