ANALYSIS
Jenkins played 17 games with Triple-A El Paso this season, posting a 7.76 ERA with a 1.99 WHIP during the course of 82.1 innings. Although he provided eight starts for the Braves last season, Jenkins was unable to find a role in San Diego's rotation, and will look to latch on elsewhere.

Jenkins, a former top-100 prospect, began his 2016 campaign with Triple-A Gwinnett, where he posted a 2.91 ERA over 65 innings. Two months into the season, he was shifted from the starting rotation to the bullpen in an effort to speed his path to the big leagues. All went according to plan and the hard-throwing righty was promoted to Atlanta in mid-June. The 24-year-old was granted eight starts, but did not take advantage of his opportunities. After a month-long demotion to Triple-A, he finished the year in the Braves' bullpen. Atlanta had apparently seen enough, swapping declining assets with Texas in an offseason trade that sent Luke Jackson to the Braves. The Rangers then designated Jenkins for assignment and he was claimed by the Reds, before he was later claimed off waivers by the Padres. It is unclear what the Padres intend to do with him in the short term, but Jenkins profiles as a low-to-mid-leverage MLB reliever long term.
Atlanta's trade of Jason Heyward to the Cardinals last winter can already be chalked up as a huge win for the Braves, as they got an absolute haul from Arizona for Shelby Miller, but don't forget Jenkins was in that return as well. Jenkins had battled some shoulder issues in 2014 which inhibited his strikeout ability and general effectiveness, but the results were still decent enough for a 21-year-old at High-A. He began his age-22 season with the Braves' Double-A Mississippi affiliate, making 16 starts before advancing to Triple-A Gwinnett for nine additional starts. Jenkins held up to the workload, but the strikeouts did not return, and he only further regressed with his control. The mid-90s fastball/curveball combination is intriguing, and Jenkins could make a case for a major-league audition relatively early on, but the development of his changeup and control will dictate his success or lack there of in 2016.
Jenkins returned from a 2013 shoulder surgery to pitch well for High-A Palm Beach, posting a 3.28 ERA in 13 starts. The once highly-touted prospect has struggled to advance through the minors, and now at 22 will likely spend most of 2015 at the Double-A level. Acquired by Atlanta in the Shelby Miller for Jason Heyward swap, Jenkins joins another organization that is great at developing young pitchers. He won't contribute at the big league level, but if the Braves are able to help Jenkins put it all together it's possible he could make an impact at the highest level in 2016.
Jenkins, a former football player, has a long way to go, but he is just 19 and had an outstanding 55:13 K:BB ratio in 11 starts with Rookie-League Johnson City last year. As long as he stays healthy and gains experience, he'll be part of what could be a very special rotation in St. Louis in five years.
