ANALYSIS
Telis, who signed a minor-league deal with the Dodgers in December, was one of two catchers cut from big-league camp Tuesday. The 30-year-old's last big-league action came with the Marlins in 2018, when he slashed .207/.258/.241 over 31 plate appearances.

Telis found 111 plate appearances for the Marlins in part because of Justin Bour's injury and the lack of alternatives the Marlins had available to play first base. In parts of four seasons as a big-league player, Telis has never been better than a replacement-level option, and there is little in his minor-league output to suggest that he would hit enough to be more than a backup behind the plate, other than his ability to put the ball in play frequently (9.5 percent K% at Triple-A in 2017). With A.J. Ellis likely out of the equation in 2018, Telis could win the job as the Marlins' No. 2 option at catcher, but J.T. Realmuto figures to log a heavy workload as the starter, and Telis' career .233/.268/.305 line through 236 plate appearances suggests that it would be prudent to look elsewhere for a roster filler in NL-only leagues that require the use of two catchers.
Telis has now delivered three straight minor league seasons batting at least .291, so he’s established a pattern of consistency in the minors. He’ll hope for an opportunity to apply that at the MLB level next season, where he’s hit .227 in 125 career plate appearances. In 2016, he slashed .310/.362/.429 in 368 plate appearances spread across 91 games with Triple-A New Orleans. He was then called up to the Marlins, where he hit .308 in very limited action. He has always made contact consistently, with his contact rate never dipping below 85 percent since 2009, sitting at 88 percent during his 2016 Triple-A season. Unfortunately for Telis, the Marlins’ young starting catcher, J.T. Realmuto, had a breakout season in 2016, so playing time may be tough to come by. That being said, a backup catcher’s job could be in the cards for Telis, who turns 26 in June.
Telis spent most of 2015 in Triple-A, seeing time with the Rangers' and Marlins' affiliates after a trade deadline deal sent him to Miami. Although he didn't show much power, Telis still produced a solid .298 batting average between Round Rock and New Orleans. He couldn't translate it to the majors, though, as his combined batting average between Texas and Miami was a poor .158 with an identical slugging percentage. The 24-year-old wasn't helped by an incredibly low walk rate (5.4% BB% in Triple-A, 2.4% BB% in the majors), but he also made contact 89 percent of the time across all levels in 2015. J.T. Realmuto and Jeff Mathis seem to be the top two catchers on the roster, but if Telis can hit better against major league pitching, he could find himself on the 25-man roster coming out of spring training.
A .318/.352/.431 batting line in 106 games between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock earned Tolis a late-season callup to the big club, and with the Rangers in full-blown evaluation mode, he was even given an audition in the primary role for a brief stretch in September. Tolis may not have done much with his opportunities (.547 OPS in the final month), and there are major concerns about his approach -- he drew a total of 24 walks in 513 plate appearances between the three levels last season -- but Tolis is still just 23 years old and there's a fairly good chance he breaks camp as the No. 2 option behind Robinson Chirinos. Neither player is the long-term answer at the position for Texas, but they will keep the seat warm until Jorge Alfaro is ready.
