Rest-of-Season Projections
Released by Angels
Schimpf was released by the Angels on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Schimpf was traded twice this offseason before again being dealt to the Angels on March 31, and was at Triple-A Salt Lake for all but five games in 2018. The 30-year-old has struggled so far this season with a .178/.288/.355 slash line with only three home runs in 107 at-bats, but could still garner interest on a minor-league contract elsewhere.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
The Padres ditched Schimpf's "three true outcomes" profile, sending him to the minors in June and shipping him to the Rays this offseason. Evan Longoria's departure from Tampa Bay may have opened up work for him at third base, and Tropicana Field is a moderate-to-positive environment for lefty pop, so the soon-to-be 30-year-old may approach his established pace of 13.0 at-bats per home run (142 games). However, even in an era when strikeouts are more acceptable, Schimpf's career 33.2 percent strikeout rate is ugly, even when paired with a 13.1 percent walk rate. His 64.6 flyball percentage all but ensures struggles in batting average, barring an extremely fortunate BABIP. Additionally, he probably won't face many lefties after hitting just .160/.270/.436 against them during his time with San Diego, significantly limiting his appeal in most mixed-league formats.
