Gets minors deal from San Diego
Rodriguez signed a minor-league contract with the Padres, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Rodriguez has 216 career relief appearances to his name at the MLB level but hasn't surfaced in the big leagues since 2016. He required shoulder surgery that same season and was sidelined for most of 2017 before pitching exclusively for the Red Sox's Triple-A affiliate in 2018, delivering a 3.20 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 64.2 innings. The 34-year-old is expected to open the upcoming campaign in the minors but could get a look in the San Diego bullpen at some point.

2012
After spending a majority of 2014 in the minors, Rodriguez spent most of his 2015 season with the A's and was one of the better arms in the A's pen. Fern-Rod ended the season with a 3.84 ERA over 58.2 Major League innings and tossed in an impressive 10.0 K/9. He still walks too many guys (3.7 BB/9), but has lowered his walk rate from his two prior full MLB season when he was with the Astros. Rodriguez's LOB% was a low 65.7% and his FIP was 3.08, suggesting that there could be some further upside for Rodriguez heading into 2016. The A's seemed hesitant to try him in the closer role in 2015 and Sean Doolittle will certainly be the closer to begin 2016, but Rodriguez could be a sneaky source of saves and probably has the highest upside of the A's bullpen arms if Doolittle's injury issues from 2016 linger.
