Fryer has retired, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran catcher had signed a minor-league deal with the Phillies in December and could have provided some organizational depth, though he wasn't likely to play a significant role this season. Fryer's retirement ends a seven-year major-league career in which he was a third or fourth catcher for the Pirates, Twins and Cardinals. He'll retire with a .232/.320/.300 line in 374 career plate appearances.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2014
Fryer has lived the life of a fringe major leaguer since 2011, bouncing between levels and organizations. In 2016, he suited up for a career-high 60 big league games; 24 with St. Louis, 36 with Pittsburgh. He batted .368 in 38 Cardinals at-bats but slumped to a .211 batting average in a 92 at-bat sample with the Bucs. He's hit only two homers in 291 career plate appearances, and at 31 years old, Fryer's chances of suddenly gaining fantasy relevance are slim (to put it nicely). However, he will get a chance to compete for a roster spot with the Cardinals in spring training.
Fryer is a minor league journeyman known for his defense who hasn't hit anywhere (.630 career OPS at Triple-A) other than a 13-game stretch in the majors in 2013. He'll likely add depth at Triple-A again and only be called up if the Twins need a third catcher.
Fryer is a minor league journeyman known for his defense who hit .385 (5-for-15) when called up to Minnesota in September. He'll likely add depth in the minors, but the Twins situation at catcher may be in flux with Joe Mauer moving to first base, so there's an opportunity for him to win a backup role.
