Mattheus was released from Triple-A Louisville, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.
ANALYSIS
Mattheus failed to earn a bullpen spot on the major league roster during camp, and didn't fare much better in the minors, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and four walks during his first seven innings of the year. He'll look to catch on elsewhere on a low-risk deal to provide organizational pitching depth.

Clearly Mattheus has never seen Bull Durham, or he would have known better than to punch with his pitching hand. After a rough outing in May he pounded a locker in frustration, breaking his hand and essentially ruining the rest of his season. What success he's had in a major league middle-relief role has been fueled by groundballs and a low BABIP rather than strikeouts. While a healthy Mattheus should win a bullpen spot this spring it wouldn't be a surprise if the Nationals moved him aside for a harder-throwing youngster.
Mattheus put together a very solid year in relief despite battling through a foot injury early in the season, but in a Washington bullpen jam-packed with power arms and players with longer resumes, it is hard to see how he will pitch in enough high-leverage situations to have any real fantasy value.
Mattheus appeared in 35 games out of the bullpen for the Nationals in 2011 after spending time in both Double-A and Triple-A. He posted a surprising 2.35 ERA, helped in large part to a .236 BABIP and a 2.9 percent HR/FB ratio. Despite averaging 93.8 mph, Mattheus does not record many swings and misses due to a lack of a dominant secondary pitch. His 3.38 K/9IP and 4.22 BB/9IP indicate he will not be as fortunate in 2012.
His numbers at Double-A in 2008 were good enough for the Nationals to give him a look despite a very rough 2009 campaign. He could still be a future big league middle reliever though, trivial considerations like shoulder troubles and control issues willing.
Five professional seasons, one ERA below 5.00, 25 years old, yet to pitch above Double-A, hasn't proven that his shoulder can hold up. Makes you wonder who the first guy left out of the magazine was, doesn't it?
