The Cards claimed Augenstein off waivers at the end of the 2010 campaign, but his ceiling is limited to that of a No. 5 MLB starter if he's able to maintain the control that prompted the D-Backs to give him a taste of the big leagues for a two-start audition in 2009. At 24, he'll likely open the season at Triple-A Memphis, but keep in mind that he was tattooed in the Pacific Coast League last season with 162 hits allowed in 120.2 innings while his walk rate swelled to a career-high 2.6 BB/9IP.
Augenstein hit the ground running with a 5-0 start at Double-A Mobile before getting a surprise early-season callup to Arizona when the big league rotation was scrambling to get by following the loss of Brandon Webb. He made a pair of starts with the D-Backs before getting sent down to Triple-A Reno, where a case of elbow inflammation limited his workload. Augenstein isn't overpowering, but he's shown good command throughout his stops in the minors and he's shown an aptitude for generating outs on the ground. In the worst-case scenario, he looks like a viable relief option for the D-Backs going forward, but Augenstein may be able to contribute in the back of the Arizona rotation as the team's fifth starter if his secondary stuff and command are good enough for him to get big league hitters out consistently.
