2014 Reds Team Preview: Is That It?

Behind the Backstop: Roster Shuffle Review

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
2014
Duran made no tangible progress with Double-A Pensacola in 2015, instead striking out more and walking a little less while hitting for less power. His presence on the Reds 40-man roster is a legacy cost from signing such a huge contract as a 16-year-old, and not an indication that he's anywhere near helping the Reds at the big league level.
When a player like Duran signs at such a young age, it's imperative for the organization to remain patient as he adjusts to playing against others that are significantly older in the lower levels of the minors. The Reds have exercised that patience with Duran, but the payoff still hasn't been there. In fact, 2014 was a year of regression for him at Double-A Pensacola, as he struck out a whopping 35.7% of the time. Even in today's high-strikeout, low-average era, that's unacceptable. The only redeeming grace is that he has maintained his power through all the whiffs, and is still just 23, but the clock is now ticking.
When Duran makes contact, the ball goes far. Alas, making contact remains a problem for him. Even after repeating High-A ball, Duran made contact just 67 percent of the time. That's actually an improvement over his last two seasons, but it bodes ill for his chances of ever hitting for a high average at advanced levels, even when accounting for his age. Barring a sea change improvement, Duran seems most likely to emulate Neftali Soto's career arc.
