Rest-of-Season Projections
Hangs up cleats
Hamels (shoulder) announced Friday that he has retired from professional baseball.
ANALYSIS
The 39-year-old lefty spent parts of 15 seasons in the majors from 2006 through 2020 and signed a minor-league deal with the Padres in February with the hope of making a comeback from shoulder surgery, which he underwent in November 2021. Unfortunately for Hamels, he never demonstrated enough progress in his recovery to make any rehab appearances in the minors and will now call it a career. The 2008 World Series MVP and four-time All-Star will finish his career with a 163-122 record to go with a 3.43 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 2,698 innings.

The Braves signed Hamels to a one-year deal last offseason to bring a veteran presence to their otherwise youthful rotation. However, Hamels was sidelined by a shoulder problem in spring training, an injury that ultimately limited him to only 3.2 innings and landed him on the injured list to close the season. Though no longer an ace in any sense, Hamels still maintained a strong cutter-changeup combination that allowed him to post a solid 3.81 ERA across 141.2 innings with the Cubs in 2019. That result was backed by a 14.1 K-BB%. However, after his lost 2020 season, Hamels will enter the 2021 campaign with plenty of questions regarding his future in the league. First, he'll again enter the offseason as a free agent. If he does land on a team with the chance to crack their Opening Day rotation, Hamels will also need to prove he is healthy enough to provide meaningful innings.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
San Diego interested?
Hamels has received recent interest from the Padres, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Hamels has not pitched in the majors since 2020, but the left-hander has shown interest in a return and impressed scouts during a recent workout. San Diego is looking to add depth to its rotation, and the southpaw would have a chance to win one of the final spots in the Padres' starting group with a quality showing in the Cactus League. At the age of 39 and with two-plus years of missing action due to arm and shoulder issues, there'd be a lot of risk that comes with Hamels that might outweigh the potential reward.
