Closer Watch

Tigers – Jose Veras collected his first save since Aug. 21 on Monday, pitching around a hit in a scoreless ninth for No. 21 on the year, but just his second as a Tiger. Joaquin Benoit was just getting the day off, though, so don't get your hopes up for Old Man Veras.

Royals – Greg Holland is the man. That is all.

Recommended Pickup
Avisail Garcia, OF, CHW – Ever since being brought up and inserted into the South Side lineup, Garcia's been showing the skills that made him a highly touted – and yet, somehow, paradoxically under-the-radar – prospect for the Tigers before they dealt him to Chicago in the three-team Jake Peavy/Jose Iglesias trade. For my money, it's the White Sox who'll win that one in the end. Entering play Monday, "Mini Miggy" was hitting .354 with two homers, two steals, 11 RBI and 12 runs with Medias Blancas de Chicago, and that's no fluke – he compiled a .379 average with seven homers and six steals in 47 minor-league games this year. He may be a free swinger, and he'll need to keep working on his pitch recognition, but the 22-year-old can flat-out hit, and at a robust 6-4, 240, he's got the size and physique to develop into a legitimate home-run hitter. That might not happen this year, but even so, his near-elite contact abilities will help you get through September.
