Closer Watch

New York (AL) - David Robertson landed on the disabled list Tuesday, clearing the way for Rafael Soriano to take over closing duties. Soriano's been slightly erratic this season, allowing 14 hits and 8 walks in 14 innings of work. However, when he was highly impressive when giving the full-time closing gig with Atlanta in 2009 and Tampa Bay in 2010. If he comes close to replicating those performances, he will likely remain the Yankees' closer even when Robertson returns.

Detroit - Jose Valverde will be out for a couple of days with a back strain. The injury isn't serious, and he is expected at to return at some point during the weekend series against Pittsburgh. Joaquin Benoit and Octavio Dotel figure to be the frontrunners for save opportunities should they arise while Valverde is out.

Colorado - In a season that's already seen lots of closer turnover already, even among established closers, longtime middle reliever Rafael Betancourt is excelling in his first season as the go-to man in the ninth inning. He carries a 1.93 ERA and 1.07 WHIP and has struck out 15 batters in 14 innings, including two on Tuesday en route to his seventh save of the season.

Recommended Pickup

Jarrod Dyson, OF, KC - After Mitchell Maier and Jason Bourgeois were ineffective in replacing injured center fielder Lorenzo Cain, Dyson has proven up to the task while becoming an intriguing fantasy option in the process. Dyson is batting .304 and getting on base at a .383 clip for the Royals, allowing him to do what he does best: steal bases. He has four steals since assuming the everyday gig in late-April, and stole 49 bags last season while splitting time between the Royals and Triple-A Omaha. Dyson's ability to get on base has led to his ascension to the top spot in the lineup, where he's piled up several runs, including six during the Royals' current four-game winning streak. If Eric Hosmer can reapproach the prowess he showed as a rookie, Dyson's run totals should only increase going forward. Cain is not expected to return until mid- to late-June, which only enhances Dyson's job security. Dyson should be owned in AL-only leagues and is probably worthy of adding in many mixed formats, especially deeper leagues.
