Closer Watch

Braves - Craig Kimbrel must not have been happy with himself Friday night when he blew the save in the bottom of the ninth after Julio Teheran threw eight innings of one run, one hit ball. Fortunately for the Braves Freddie Freeman bailed out the team with a walk off single in the bottom of the tenth. Even after the blown save, Kimbrel's second the season, the Braves closer still has nine saves with a 2.70 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Compared to his career averages of a 1.46 ERA and 0.92 WHIP Kimbrel is having an off year, but it would take a long stretch of poor performances before there is even a thought of having someone else close for the Braves.

Reds - Jonathan Broxton blew his first save of 2014 on Friday which was the day before the Reds activated Ardolis Chapman from the disabled list. Broxton gave up the one run lead his team gave him for the top of the ninth against the Rockies on a double to Justin Morneau, but the Reds in turn gave Broxton his first win of the season from a Joey Votto walk off homer in the bottom of the same frame. Broxton will move to the setup role for the Reds, and Chapman will return as the closer where he has dominated by recording 38 saves each of the past two seasons.

Recommended Pickup

Roenis Elias, P, SEA - The Mariners may have found themselves a gem in their rookie Cuban-born southpaw. In Elias' last two starts at the Yankees and at the Athletics he had 16 strikeouts, four earned runs, and two wins over 13.1 innings. Elias has a ERA at home almost a full point above his season average, so he may not be the best for a spot start this Sunday at home against the Royals for teams that have concerns about their ERA. For the more desperate fantasy teams looking for some last minute strikeouts Elias should be able to help out. Elias has a total of 37 strikeouts in 41.1 innings, approximately 8.0 K/9, in 2014 which is right on track with his minor league average of the same amount. If Elias is able to preform at the pitcher friendly confines of Safeco Field like he has on the road in his first Major League season he may develop into a mainstay of the Seattle rotation.
