Closer Watch

Red Sox: On Friday, Andrew Bailey was placed on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. It was reported that the damage is quite significant, and could result in potentially season-ending surgery. This has yet to be determined, but for now the closing position will be securely held down by Koji Uehara. Over his past 13 games, Uehara has been stellar with a 0.68 ERA and 19 strikeouts while collecting seven saves. If he falters, Junichi Tazawa would likely be the next in line for save opportunities.

Recommended Pickup

Chris Archer, SP, TB - Over the past two seasons, the young right-hander, Archer, has been regarded as the top pitching prospect for the Rays. His drawback in the minor leagues and his first few times in the majors, was that he did not pitch very deep into games. He put that notion to rest in his start on July 14 against the Astros, throwing a complete game, four-hit shutout. His strikeout rate in the minors has typically sat around 9.0 per nine innings, but has been a little lower in the majors. With his powerful pitch arsenal of a hard fastball, slider, and changeup, he is bound to eventually rack up strikeouts. He has a 2.96 ERA on the season and has been dominant over his last three starts, allowing just two earned runs. Granted, the lineups he faced in the Twins and Astros were not potent by any means, but he is gaining momentum. His biggest risk is the question of what the Rays will do with their rotation once Alex Cobb is able to return from the disabled list. With the way he is pitching, it would be difficult to remove him from the rotation in the middle of a playoff race.
