Retires following UFC 287 loss

Masvidal lost to Gilbert Burns via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 28-29) at UFC 287 on Saturday in Miami. He retired following the bout.
ANALYSIS
Masvidal hinted recently this might be the end if he came up short against Burns, and in his hometown of Miami, there was no better place to go out. Jorge was reasonably effective on the feet in the early going and may have even deserved Round 1. After that, Burns got his grappling game going, and as one might expect, Masvidal generated zero offense while plastered to the mat for nearly all of Round 2 and a chunk of Round 3. All the grappling appeared to tire Jorge out, as Burns beat him up on the feet late in the final frame. Jorge seems legitimately at peace with the decision to step aside, which is always a good thing. He ends his UFC run with a 12-10 record in 22 fights. Included in there were victories over the likes of Michael Chiesa, Donald Cerrone, Darren Till and Nate Diaz. His most memorable moment was likely his five-second knockout of Ben Askren with a flying knee at UFC 239 in July 2019. It was quite a run for "Gamebred".

Not competitive in main event

Masvidal lost to Colby Covington via unanimous decision (46-49, 44-50, 45-50) at UFC 272 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It played out exactly as most expected. Masvidal did fine in the stand-up exchanges between the two men at distance, but Covington's wrestling game completely overwhelmed him. Every single time Jorge seemed to be making any sort of headway, Colby pushed forward for a takedown. They didn't all land, but even those that failed limited Masvidal's space on the feet. Jorge had arguably the biggest moment of the fight with a knockdown late in Round 4, but he simply didn't have the energy or ability to try to follow it up with additional power shots. It ended up being his last positive moment of the fight. Masvidal recently signed a new deal with the UFC which reportedly made him one of the highest-priced fighters in the company, so he isn't going anywhere, but Jorge has now lost three straight dating back to July 2020. Granted, those three defeats came against Covington and current UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman (twice), the two best 170-pound fighters in the world. On the bright side, on top of the contract, Masvidal did receive an extra $50,000 check for this one after this bout was awarded Fight of the Night honors.
Taking on Colby Covington

January 11, 2022
Masvidal and Colby Covington will square off in the UFC 272 headliner in Las Vegas on March 5, Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Masvidal is an accomplished fighter but will be looking to avoid a three-fight losing streak, as his last two trips to the Octagon have ended in defeat at the hands of welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. Covington has also struggled against Usman recently, losing against the champion in two of his last three fights.
