I. When Your Best Defenders are Midfielders
Manchester United's best fantasy defenders aren't even defenders. Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young's play at wingback has been nothing short of a miracle. They are providing excellent width for the Red Devils and, particularly, are bombing forward in attempts to get crosses and shots in. This opportunity is what one looks for in a fantasy defender. Unfortunately, they are still classified as midfielders in nearly all formats. That being said, they could be great picks if their positions are changed for Segment 2.
II. Speak of the (Red) Devils
The front four of Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, and Falcao all got on the scoresheet on Boxing Day against Newcastle. This will likely not occur every week, but it is encouraging that they are finding a way to play together seamlessly. It does raise the question, however, of who makes way once Angel Di Maria comes back? Bottom line, get the points now while they last.
III. Chelsea's Defensive MVP
John Terry may be the most valuable Chelsea defender right now. The consensus is that Branislav Ivanovic is the one to own for fantasy purposes, but Terry has two goals in as many games while Ivanovic hasn't scored since August during the 6-3 flaying at Goodison Park. Additionally, Chelsea average 18 crosses per game, the third-lowest in the Premier League and indicative of Ivanovic's lack of effectiveness being The Blues' source of width.
IV. JWP Coming Along
James Ward-Prowse is finding his form. The young Englishman is three weeks back from injury and picked up his first two assists since September on Friday. Moreover, he played his first full 90 minutes. He is definitely worth considering picking up now while he is still on the cheaper side. I value him higher than Dusan Tadic.
