Tim Kennedy

Announces retirement from MMA
MiddleweightUFC
January 17, 2017
Kennedy announced his retirement from MMA via his personal Facebook page Tuesday morning.
ANALYSIS
Kennedy recently suffered a TKO defeat at the hands of the much younger Kelvin Gastelum, and although many might attribute this performance to ring rust -- he hadn't fought in 800-plus days -- the 37-year-old identified shortcomings in his speed and stamina that led to his defeat. In his statement, Kennedy acknowledged many of the great middleweights that helped him become a better fighter, and also reemphasized his commitment to taking care of the athletes that compete in MMA (he's on the board of a new fighter's union). He'll finish his career of over 15 years with an 18-6 (3-2 UFC) record.

Knocked out by Kelvin Gastelum in return at UFC 206
MiddleweightUFC
December 10, 2016
Kennedy lost Kelvin Gastelum via TKO (punches) at 2:45 of Round 3 at UFC 206 on Saturday in Toronto.
ANALYSIS
Outside of the first three minutes or so, Kennedy looked like a guy who hadn't fought in 805 days. He used his upper-body strength to force Gastelum up against the fence early in Round 1, but as soon as the fight returned to the center of the octagon, Kennedy had no chance. He was tuned up on the feet in every single striking exchange between the two men and he also appeared exhausted, which was shocking for a fighter who is known for his elite cardio. The question moving forward is -- was this poor performance the result of octagon rust after so much time away? Or are Kennedy's skills possibly slipping at age 37? It could truly be either scenario.
Faces Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 206
MiddleweightUFC
November 30, 2016
Kennedy will now face Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 206 on Dec. 10 in Toronto, Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Kennedy was originally scheduled to face former light heavyweight Rashad Evans, but problems with Evans' medicals scrapped bouts at both UFC 205 and UFC 206. Instead, Kennedy will take on Gastelum, a wrestler that was also pulled from UFC 205 after failing to make the welterweight limit of 170 pounds. The UFC effectively forced Gastelum to move up to middleweight (185 pounds) moving forward, and the 37-year-old Kennedy will be his first fight. Kennedy hasn't fought since a loss to Yoel Romero in December of 2014, so rust could very well be a factor. That being said, he'll hold a height and reach advantage over Gastelum, who is a bit undersized for the middleweight division.
UFC 206 fight with Evans in jeopardy
MiddleweightUFC
November 21, 2016
Kennedy stated Monday on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani that his fight with Rashad Evans at UFC 206 has been called off after Evans once again failed to get licensed.
ANALYSIS
Kennedy maintains that he is still cutting weight, and is hopeful that the UFC will be able to find him a replacement fight. The two were originally supposed to fight at UFC 205 in New York, but the bout was called off due to an unspecified medical issue that Evans was dealing with. The UFC has yet to officially confirm the news.
Fight with Evans moved to UFC 206
MiddleweightUFC
November 10, 2016
Kennedy's scheduled fight with Rashad Evans has been moved to UFC 206 on Dec. 10 in Toronto.
ANALYSIS
Kennedy arrived in New York on Tuesday to an unexpected surprise, learning that he would not be fighting Evans at UFC 205 due to a problem with Evans' medicals. He proceeded to frantically make pleas via social media to find a new opponent, but with the fight less than a week away, Kennedy was unsuccessful. It turns out the two will fight after all, but it will be nearly a month later than originally planned. That wait is nothing for Kennedy in the grand scheme of things, as he hasn't fought professionally since a loss to Yoel Romero in September of 2014.
UFC 205 status up in the air
MiddleweightUFC
November 8, 2016
Kennedy will need a short-notice replacement opponent for UFC 205 on Saturday, as Rashad Evans was removed from the card Tuesday due to an unspecified medical issue, ESPN's Brett Okamoto reports.
ANALYSIS
Kennedy was en route to New York when the unfortunate news broke. A veteran middleweight, Kennedy had been scheduled to return to the Octagon after over two years out of sanctioned competition. Rumors of replacement options have been swirling, but nothing is official just yet. Kennedy has publicly expressed his dismay about his pay for this fight, saying he would essentially be breaking even, so one would imagine he would take just about any opponent thrown his way in order to receive some type of compensation for the event.
