September 20, 2019
Evans parted ways with the UFC on Friday and plans to fight again, Brett Okamoto of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Evans announced his retirement from MMA back in June of 2018 on the heels of a five-fight losing streak. However, it looks like the veteran is looking to get back to fighting, and it will be with a promotion other than the UFC.

Announces retirement from MMA
Light HeavyweightOther
June 25, 2018
Evans announced that he was retiring from MMA on Monday during an appearance on Ariel Helwani's MMA Show.
ANALYSIS
Evans may have finished his career on a five-fight losing streak, but don't let that take away from the fact that he was once one of the more feared light heavyweights on the entire UFC roster. The winner of season two of The Ultimate Fighter, Evans held the belt following a 2008 victory over Forrest Griffin, though he proceeded to lose it in his first title defense against Lyoto Machida. Evans then bounced back with a four-fight winning streak over some of the promotion's best, but came up short in his next title shot against Jon Jones in 2012 via unanimous decision. "Suga" will finish his MMA career with a professional record of 19-8-1, having collected victories over the likes of Michael Bisping, Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin, Rampage Jackson and Dan Henderson. His role in building the popularity of the sport could very well punch him a hall-of-fame ticket.
End of line approaching after KO loss to Anthony Smith
Light HeavyweightOther
June 9, 2018
Evans lost to Anthony Smith via KO (knee) at 0:53 of Round 1 at UFC 225 on Saturday in Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Now riding a five-fight losing streak and without a victory in approaching five years, perhaps this is the performance that will finally allow Evans to see the light and hang up his gloves. Suga left his head exposed during a clinch exchange along the fence and Smith darn near knocked it completely off. Evans is one of the all-time greats and a future Hall of Famer, but he has less than nothing left at age 38. The UFC needs to intervene if he isn't willing to step aside on his own.
Will fight Anthony Smith at UFC 225
Light HeavyweightOther
March 12, 2018
Evans will fight Anthony Smith at UFC 225 on June 9.
ANALYSIS
After starting his career with a 19-3 record, Evans has lost his last four fights in a row, most recently suffering a decision loss to Sam Alvey back in August. However, Evans squashed retirement talk after that bout and will now get back in the octagon in June as promised. He'll look to bounce-back against Anthony Smith, who is also coming off a defeat of his own at the hands of Thiago Santos in February. At 38 years old, Evans could struggle to keep up with the younger Smith and he's also at a fairly significant height disadvantage at 6-foot, compared to Smith at 6-foot-4.
Retirement not on the table
Light HeavyweightOther
September 27, 2017
Evans does not plan to retire in the immediate future, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Evans, like many aging fighters, recently attempted to revitalize his career with a drop down to the 185-pound division. He's lost two fights in a row since the move, however, and has been defeated in his last four fights overall. Rather than hang up the gloves, the 38-year-old insists on ending his career on a positive note, and hasn't ruled out moving back up to 205 pounds, where he claims to have more energy. Evans is a veteran of 27 professional fights, and although he was once a title contender, he's approaching a territory where he would enter as a betting underdog against the majority of the 205-pounders on the UFC roster.
Defeated via Split Decision in Mexico City
Light HeavyweightOther
August 5, 2017
Evans was defeated by Sam Alvey via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night 114 on Saturday in Mexico City.
ANALYSIS
Evans tried to implement a wrestling game plan in this fight, but his strategy was stymied by the great takedown defense of Alvey. "Suga" came out in the first round looking to use his Division 1 wrestling credentials to negate the power of Alvey, and he continually attempted takedowns throughout the round. He had limited success. In the last two rounds he continued to attempt takedowns, but Alvey continued to defend or immediately get back to his feet. Evans also found himself constantly retreating during the fight, which certainly influenced the judges. Evans is 37 years old and has lost four fights in a row. Alvey is not ranked in the top fifteen and is the type of opponent Evans would have feasted on earlier in his career. At this point, it is probably time for Rashad to call it a career.
